One of Simon Oldfield's bream in Sunday's River Mersey match
IT’S officially getting cold now for anglers, with reports of extra thermals and doubled-up socks...
Likewise, some of our fish will also be preparing for winter; some will eat as much as they can, others will look for a suitable retreat - and some will start to hunt!
Your catch reports are important so please keep sending them over. As ever, contact details are at the bottom of this article.
An update from Cicely Mill Pool to start things off.
Some of you might have already visited and seen the improvements made so far. For those who’ve missed it, here's a quick recap: Over the summer months your bailiffs and volunteers completely rebuilt all the pegs on the left-hand side of the pool.
In addition to that, the path behind the pegs and also the car park have been completely resurfaced.
All car park pegs received new timber frames and resurface.
Weed and water levels were also maintained, with weed being the best it’s been in many years.
As for catch reports, I hear that a lot of quality tench (as well as pristine mini-tench) are being caught from the new pegs, with plenty of roach, decent sized perch and some crucians too.
If you would like to get involved with volunteering for upcoming work parties, message or email the WAA secretary.
Onto some housekeeping now.

Latest catch news:
Now then, onto some fishing reports.
Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardener aka the “Dynamic Duo” were back on the bank this week.
They set up at Bridgewater Canal, Hough Bridge.
Dave fished the pole with size 18 hook and double red maggot. At a depth of 4ft he landed plenty of quality perch, ide and roach. He was very happy with his catch, but lady luck was definitely on Ken’s side.
Ken fished a size 20 hook with double red maggots and loose-fed a few maggots over the top. For every fish Dave caught, Ken caught two - a well-deserved reward after helping his partner in crime by lugging all of his gear! They both thoroughly enjoyed their session in the sunshine.

Anthony Higham’s report from the River Mersey match 28/09/2025:
The river level at the start of the match was 4.01 metres with a good flow and a bit of colour. 15 members took part in all.
River newbie Simon Oldfield took the top spot, in only his second Mersey Match. He drew peg 34 and fished the tip all match, clipping up at 18 turns paired with a 45 gram window feeder and dead maggots on the hook.
Simon had more than 20 decent stamp skimmers, along with a few bits, for a winning weight of 22lbs 10ozs 0drs. Well done Simon, a great catch!
